A Surprise Proposal on Cocoa Beach, Florida
There are very few photography sessions where one person knows exactly what’s about to happen and the other person has absolutely no idea.
That’s part of what makes photographing proposals so much fun.
For this Cocoa Beach proposal, everything was waiting near the ocean (but a safe distance from the waves). Flowers, a picnic setup and champagne for afterward. My job was to be in exactly the right place at the right time while also being very easy to ignore.
Which is slightly harder than it sounds when you’re carrying cameras on a beach. 😂
But that’s also the fun of photographing a surprise proposal.
I stayed back while they made their way toward the setup, photographed the moment he got down on one knee, and then captured everything that happened naturally afterward.
And yes — she said yes.
Photographing the actual proposal
The proposal itself is the one part of the session we can’t redo.
That’s why I like to plan every aspect of the logistics ahead of time. We’ll talk about exactly where you’re proposing, where you’ll be coming from, how I’ll recognize you and where I’ll position myself so I can photograph the moment without becoming part of it.
Once you’re in place, you don’t have to worry about me. I’ll be there even if you can’t see me.
You just propose.
And then we celebrate
One of my favorite things about photographing proposals is that the session doesn’t end after the answer.
Once the secret is out and everyone can breathe again, we’ll spend some time taking photographs together.
And because you’ve just gotten engaged approximately five minutes earlier, you don’t have to manufacture much emotion for the camera.
That was definitely true for these two.
We walked along Cocoa Beach, photographed the new ring, took advantage of the dunes and ocean, and eventually broke out the champagne.

Cocoa Beach can be a beautiful place to propose, but choosing the exact spot and time matters.
The beach can change dramatically depending on the time of day, weather, crowds and even where you are along the shoreline. That’s why I like being involved before the proposal whenever possible.

By the end of this session, we had gone from a secret proposal to a complete gallery documenting the whole evening — the setup, the actual proposal, the ring, the celebration and their first portraits as an engaged couple.
And I think that’s one of the best reasons to have your proposal photographed.
You aren’t just getting a picture of someone down on one knee.
You’re keeping the whole story.
