Do you really need an engagement session?
No.
There are plenty of things you genuinely need to get married. An engagement session isn’t one of them.
But while it may not be required, it can make a surprising difference in how comfortable and prepared you feel on your wedding day. It also gives you something that your wedding photographs cannot: relaxed photographs of the two of you during this part of your life, without a timeline or a room full of guests waiting for you.
So, should you have one?
Here are the reasons I recommend engagement sessions—and the situations in which it is perfectly reasonable to skip one.
You’ll become more comfortable in front of the camera
Almost every couple tells me some version of the same thing:
“We’re awkward in pictures.”
“We don’t know how to pose.”
“One of us hates having our picture taken.”
That is completely normal. And honestly.. I say the exact same things when I get pictures taken! Most people do not spend their days being professionally photographed.
An engagement session gives you time to settle into the experience without the schedule and emotions of a wedding day. I’ll give you gentle direction, help you find flattering light and create opportunities for you to interact naturally.
You will not be expected to arrive knowing what to do with your hands.
By the end of the session, most couples tell me that the experience was much easier—and much more fun—than they expected.

You’ll learn how I photograph you
An engagement session isn’t only practice for the couple. It also helps me learn about the two of you.
Every couple interacts differently. Some people are affectionate and quiet. Some tease each other constantly. Some are always moving, while others are most comfortable wrapped up together.
I get to see what makes you laugh, what kind of direction feels natural and when to step back and let a moment happen.
You also learn how I work. By the time your wedding arrives, you already know that I’ll guide you when you need it and won’t force you into stiff, uncomfortable poses.
That familiarity can make wedding-day portraits feel more like spending time together and less like a formal photo shoot.
It gives you photographs that feel different from your wedding
Wedding photographs are incredibly meaningful, but they represent one particular day.
An engagement session can capture something quieter and more familiar: the two of you walking through your favorite neighborhood, visiting a garden, exploring downtown or ending an evening in the ocean.
You can wear something that feels like you. You can choose a location that has personal meaning—or simply one that gives you the atmosphere you love.
Your engagement session does not have to match your wedding. If you’re planning a ballroom wedding, you can choose the beach. If you’re getting married by the ocean, you can choose colorful murals, tropical gardens or the historic streets of Winter Park.
The session gets to tell another part of your story.

You can use the photographs in practical ways
Engagement photographs are useful for more than social media.
Couples often use them for:
- Save-the-dates
- Wedding websites
- Invitations
- Guest books
- Reception displays
- Shower decorations
- Holiday cards
- Framed photographs at home
- Gifts for parents and grandparents
They also ensure that you have professional photographs together that aren’t all taken in wedding clothes.
Even if you don’t need photographs for a specific wedding item, it is worth considering whether you would simply enjoy having them.
It gives you time to slow down together
Wedding planning can make every conversation feel like a checklist.
An engagement session gives you permission to step away from the seating chart, vendor emails and decisions for an hour. You get dressed up, spend time together and focus on the reason you’re planning the wedding in the first place.
You don’t need to treat it like another task.
Plan dinner afterward. Visit a favorite place. Get in the water. Make the session part of a date rather than another wedding appointment.
The couples who come ready to play, laugh and trust the process are usually the ones who forget they are being photographed at all.

When might you skip an engagement session?
An engagement session may not be the right choice for everyone.
You might decide to skip it if:
- Your wedding is happening very soon.
- You live out of state and cannot easily travel for a session.
- Your budget needs to remain focused on wedding-day coverage.
- You recently had professional photographs taken together.
- Your schedules make arranging another session genuinely stressful.
- You simply do not want one.
Those are all completely valid reasons.
I would only hesitate to skip the session because you think you are not photogenic or believe you will be too awkward. Those feelings are precisely why an engagement session can be so helpful.
You do not need to change yourselves or become good at posing. You need a photographer who helps you feel comfortable enough to be yourselves.
What if we live outside Florida?
Many couples plan Florida weddings from another state, especially destination weddings along the Space Coast.
If you cannot travel to Florida before the wedding, we can discuss other options. You might schedule a session when you visit for another planning appointment, photograph it closer to the wedding or plan a relaxed couple’s session after the wedding.
Depending on your plans, we may also be able to arrange a short session the day before the wedding.
The purpose is to make the experience helpful—not to create another logistical problem.
When should we schedule the session?
If you need the photographs for save-the-dates, schedule your session early enough to allow time for gallery delivery, designing and printing.
If there is no deadline, you have much more flexibility. Think about the Florida season, the location you want and what you would like the session to feel like.
My guide to when to take engagement photos in Florida explains how your wedding date, weather and plans for the photographs can help you decide.

What should we wear?
You do not need to buy an entirely new wardrobe for your engagement photographs.
I’d much rather you wear something that feels like you.
Choose clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident, coordinate with each other without matching exactly, and think about your location when choosing colors and fabrics.
I put together a complete guide on what to wear for engagement photos in Florida if you want more ideas.
Where should we take our engagement photos?
There are so many options around Melbourne, Melbourne Beach and the surrounding Space Coast.
And your engagement session definitely does not have to be on the beach.
We can photograph at a garden, somewhere downtown, in a park, near the water or somewhere meaningful to the two of you.
I love helping couples choose locations that fit their personalities instead of simply choosing the same place everyone else uses.

So, do you need an engagement session?
No.
But I think they’re incredibly valuable.
Not because you need another wedding task or because every engaged couple is supposed to have one.
They give you a chance to become comfortable in front of the camera, learn what it’s like to work together and have photographs of this very specific chapter of your relationship.
And when your wedding day arrives, instead of wondering what being photographed is going to feel like, you already know.
You can just enjoy your day.
